October is Family History Month

Since it is Family History Month, we at the NorthEast Alabama Genealogical Society would like to hear about your exciting Summer research discoveries or the Project you want to complete in the next few weeks.  Let’s kick off the month with some great discoveries.   The Howard Gardner Nichols Memorial Library is always here to help with genealogical resources and encouragement.   Happy Family History Month – Be sure to let us know where you are researching.  Remember NEAGS are researchers just like you.

  1. In regard to my Cherokee Co, Alabama heritage… Elisha Hawkins (2nd great grandfather) was raised a Quaker. Our original ancestors, Jeffrey and Dorothy MATTOCK Hawkins (my 7th ggparents), arrived in Pennsylvania on the Welcome Ship, October 1862, with William Penn. Many generations tromped west. The 1850 census finds Elisha and Elizabeth Guthry living in Cherokee Co. AL. They were born and married in South Carolina. They were the parents of George Dallas Hawkins. (1847-1919). George Dallas and Elizabeth HENDRICKS Hawkins married in Cherokee Co prior to the 1870 census. Elizabeth was born in Sept 1854. She would have been 16 at the time of her child’s birth in 1871. George Dallas and Elizabeth had 5 sons and 2 daughters by 1883. In 1886 they were living in Bell County, Texas where their daughter was born. In the 1900 and 1910 census they were living in Floyd, NM where they were peanut farmers. Their son, Allie, married Lucy Northcutt in 1908 and they high tailed to Texas as neither had any interest in farming! My dad, A.L. (known as Chuck) was born in 1923 in Lubbock, Texas. The San Antonio Genealogical and Historical Society’s periodical, Our Heritage, has published three of my articles about my dad’s exploits during WWII. The latest issue of WWII stories has all three. Knowing his heritage should make these stories more interesting for the reader. If NEAGS does not have a copy, let me know. I will donate a copy to the library.
